What is Sprint Planning?
Sprint planning or sprint grooming is an event that defines the goal of the sprint, what can be delivered and how that work will be achieved.
Prior to starting a Sprint, a company, team or individual must define the objective and plan the work that must be carried out during the time-boxed period of time.
The event or meeting behind planning the work ahead is known as a Sprint Planning or Sprint Grooming session and is intended to create an environment where the team is motivated, challenged and can be successful.
During this planning session, teams identify:
The What
Define the objective of the sprint and which backlog items will be part of this goal.
These decisions should be guided by a product owner, manager or team lead but should be collaboratively decided by the team.
The How
Define how the work should be executed.
This conversation should be guided by the product owner, manager or team lead but should be held between the members carrying out the work. This should be done in tandem with The Who, to align individuals on how who is doing what and when.
The Who
Define who is doing which part of the work.
This conversation should be guided by the product owner, manager or team lead but should be held between the members carrying out the work. This should be done in tandem with The How, to align individuals on how who is doing what and when.
The Inputs
Select the tickets (i.e. user stories) that make up the what from the backlog.
The Outputs
Define how the inputs result in significant output(s) and how that produces the desired outcome.
This should be framed as the Sprint Goal or Sprint Objective.
