What are the fundamental elements of a Brand?

The fundamental components of a brand are its mission, brand pyramid, logo, tagline, slogan, brand assets and its styleguide, brand styleguide or brand book.

When creating, updating or rebranding a Brand, it is recommended that you create the following elements or components:

Brand Mission

A short statement that explains the vision, purpose and value proposition of a business.

Brand Pyramid

A brand pyramid broken down into its parts. Core functionality is at the bottom and is defined as the products and services offered by the brand. The rational benefits one tier above the core functionality and is defined as the tangible benefits that the brand offers over its competitors. A tier above the rational benefits are the emotional benefits that are described as how the customer should feel when interacting with the brand. Above emotional benefits is the personality which is described as adjectives and phrases to personify the brand. Finally, at the top is the brand essence, which is described as the mission statement or core values.

A tool that answers fundamental questions about what a company has to offer and how to frame it effectively for customers.

A graphical mark, emblem or symbol that visually represents a brand.

Tagline

A tagline is a short, permanent phrase that identifies a brand.

Slogan

A short, temporary and memorable phrase that helps customers remember a brand.

Brand Assets

Recognizable elements that embody a brands identity which range from the physical to the digital and include materials, images, videos, colors, sounds and text.

Styleguide, Brand Styleguide or Brand Book

A document that sets specific guidelines for the use of brand asset to re-create a brand identity across all internal or external communications.

Brand Strategy

A plan to make sure that a brand image successfully matches a brand identity.
