How to rename a variables group in Figma

A step by step guide on changing/updating the name of a group of variables within collections in Figma.

Step One: Open the Variables Window

A screenshot of Figma highlighting the settings icon to the right of "Local Variables" on the right menu side bar. Click it to open the variables window. If you can't find it, make sure you have selected the canvas (i.e. that no frame, asset or other object is selected).

On the right menu bar, next to Local Variables, click the settings icon.

Step Two: Open the Sidebar

Click the icon on the top left to open the sidebar.

Step Three: Select the Collection

Click it to open a dropdown that allows you to select, create, delete or modify the existing collection. In this dropdown. Select the collection that holds the group you want to rename. Please note that another collection will only appear if you have already created one.

Select the collection that holds the group that you wish to rename.

Please note that other collections will only appear if they were previously created.

Step Four: Rename the Variables Group

Double click either of these to edit the name. Press the enter key when you are done changing the name.

Double click the name of the group and type in the new name.

Press enter once you are done changing/updating the name of the variables group.
