A step by step guide on changing/updating the name of a Color, Number, String (i.e. text) or Boolean (i.e. On/Off) variable in Figma.

Step One: Open the Variables Window

A screenshot of Figma highlighting the settings icon to the right of "Local Variables" on the right menu side bar. Click it to open the variables window. If you can't find it, make sure you have selected the canvas (i.e. that no frame, asset or other object is selected).

On the right menu bar, next to Local Variables, click the settings icon.

Step Two: Rename a Variable

A screenshot of Figma showing the Variable window open, it shows 4 variables with default names. The four variables are a color, number, string and boolean. You can double click the name input box and it will allow you to rename the variable. Once you’re done, press enter.

Double click the name of the variable that you wish to change and type in the new name.

Press Enter when you're ready to change/update the variable's name.

Please note that it is recommended that you use Camel Casing (ideal), Kebab Casing, Snake Casing or Pascal Casing to allow the your design system to translate directly into code.
