How to move a Variable from one Variable Group to another in Figma

A step by step guide on moving a variable into a variable group within a collection.

Please note that at the time of writing this post it is not possible to move variables from one collection to another. You would need to delete the variable and create it within the new collection.

Step One: Open the Variables Window

A screenshot of Figma highlighting the settings icon to the right of "Local Variables" on the right menu side bar. Click it to open the variables window. If you can't find it, make sure you have selected the canvas (i.e. that no frame, asset or other object is selected).

On the right menu bar, next to Local Variables, click the settings icon.

Step Two: Open the Sidebar

A screenshot of Figma showing the Variable window open, it shows 4 variables with default names. The four variables are a color, number, string and boolean. They are split across two groups, “all variables” and “colors”. Highlighted on the top left of the variables window is the sidebar icon. Click it to open the sidebar.

Click the icon on the top left to open the sidebar.

Step Three: Select the Collection

A screenshot of Figma showing the Variable window open, it shows 4 variables with default names. The four variables are a color, number, string and boolean. They are split across two groups, “all variables” and “colors”. The variable window sidebar is open and we have highlighted the collection selector on the top left of the side bar. Click it to change the selected collection. Please note that if you have not created a collection then you will not be able to change the collection.

Select the collection that holds the group(s) and variable(s) that you wish to move around.

Step Four: Drag and drop the Variable

A screenshot of Figma showing the Variable window open, it shows 4 variables with default names. The four variables are a color, number, string and boolean. They are split across two groups, “all variables” and “colors”. The variable window sidebar is open and the “all variables” group is selected and highlighted - this must be selected in order for you to be able to move any variable around within a collection. Once you have selected all variables, click and then drag and drop the variable into the group you wish to move it into. This can be done by dragging and dropping into the group in the main window or on the side bar.

With All Variables selected on the sidebar, click the variable you wish to move and drag and drop it into the new group.

As shown in the image above, you can do this by either dragging it within the main variable window or into the folder on the sidebar.
